Beading with the best for Mandela Day

Nelson Mandela International Day celebrations kicked off in jubilant form as South African musical heavyweight Jimmy Nevis engaged in a bead-off showdown with two of the country’s fastest bracelet makers.

The “Big Beats vs Beading Elites” competition took place live on SABC’s Expresso this month, in honour of Mandela Day. Khayelitsha residents and employees of 100% not-for-profit social enterprise Relate Bracelets, Macy Jozana and Nozibonelo Mayekiso, demonstrated their superior crafting credentials during the extended bead-off to comfortably win the head-to-head contest.

Every year, Relate stages awareness and fundraising drives aligned with Mandela Day. In doing so, the social enterprise has raised millions of Rands to benefit poverty alleviation and social upliftment causes such as South African NGO Ikamva Labantu and the Nelson Mandela School Library Project. Over the past year and through its Mandela Centenary Bracelet, Relate has raised close to R540 000 for libraries to be built in underfunded schools across South Africa.
