arabella8par5The picturesque Arabella Golf Course, nestled on the banks of southern Africa’s largest lagoon in Kleinmond, has climbed to number 4 in the latest Golf Digest rankings of South African courses that were revealed in the magazine this week.

Courses are rated by a panel on a number of criteria that includes design, course condition and playability. The 18 hole, Par 72 Peter Matkovich Championship Arabella Golf Course has earned respect from the world’s finest golfers and has consistently been ranked as one of the top courses in South Africa. The 8th hole has been described as one of the most beautiful par 5s in the country, and the 18th has been rated one of the finest finishing holes. The Arabella Hotel & Spa is one of only a handful of 5-star resorts in South Africa where golfers can literally roll out of their rooms onto a Top 5 golf course. The clubhouse is part of the hotel, and the 1st tee box is barely 50metres away.

For those wanting a more sedate pastime, the Arabella Spa is a glorious retreat that captures the essence of luxury, privacy and rejuvenation. Famous as one of South Africa’s premiere spa destinations, the award winning Arabella Spa is a heavenly retreat devoted to wellness. Opportunity also abounds for the athletically inclined. Partake in a spirited game of tennis on the estate’s court or a fitness and training session in the Arabella Spa gymnasium. The hotel is also located in the heart of the Unesco-registered Koegelberg Biosphere Reserve, which offers extreme mountain biking and hiking trails, as well as horse riding.

Sublime dining awaits in the Jamani Restaurant, a reflection of South Africa’s love affair with good food and wine. The lobby area offers guests respite at Barnabas’ Bar and Laguna Lounge, and smokers will feel right at home in Cristobal’s Cigar Bar, which offers some of the world’s finest malts, cognacs and cigars in a relaxed lounge setting. In winter a roaring log fire adds to its sophisticated yet cosy atmosphere. The Arabella Hotel & Spa is just over an hour’s drive from Cape Town. It is on the outskirts from South Africa’s whale-watching capital, Hermanus, which is arguably the world’s best land-based whale watching location. The area is also famous for Great White Shark cage diving, and for its pristine fynbos in the Koegelberg Biosphere Reserve. South Africa’s celebrated Winelands region is less than an hour’s drive away.

Arabella Golf Director Jonathan Menteath said that the higher ranking showed the attention to detail and commitment to bettering the course from the enthusiastic STAFF. “We’re doing the right thing; moving in the right direction. It’s particularly gratifying that we’ve climbed because as a hotel management company (African Pride Hotels) we’ve had Arabella as part of our portfolio for less than a year.” This sentiment was echoed by Protea Hospitality Group CEO Arthur Gillis, who said African Pride Hotels was committed to offering superb facilities and service to Arabella GUESTS and club visitors. He congratulated the STAFF that had contributed to the climb in the ranking on their hard work.

The other South African golf courses in the Top 5 are Leopard Creek Country Club, The Links at Fancourt, Gary Player Country Club at Sun City and Pearl Valley in Paarl.
