September 2012: The four-month transformation of Protea Hotel Kruger Gate, located just 100m from the Paul Kruger entrance to the Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga, is complete and the hotel is showing a stylish and more environmentally friendly face to the world.
The refurbishment encompassed the rooms, elevated walkways, conference facilities, restaurant and perhaps most importantly, infrastructural changes that now see a marked improvement in water and energy consumption.
The hotel, on the banks of the Sabie River, offers a luxurious bush getaway to both international and domestic travellers, as well as a unique conference destination for up to 220 people.
The hotel rooms have had an elegant makeover, with a major focus on GUEST comfort. The beds have been replaced with luxurious extra-length bed sets and all the room furnishings were refurbished or replaced.
The rooms now also have comfortable multipurpose L-shaped daybeds that can double as children’s beds, and new insect-resistant window screens.
Bathrooms have also been redone and now sport spacious walk-in showers.
The hotel’s restaurant has had its own facelift in the refurbishment process, as has the lapa outdoor dining area. All buffet facilities have been replaced or upgraded, the restaurant has new tables and the lapa’s thatch has been extended and replaced.
Much of the work done on the hotel has been behind the scenes, though, says Protea Hospitality Group Operations Director William Ford.
“The bulk of the refurbishment spend has gone towards projects that reduce the property’s environmental footprint. The air conditioners have been replaced with energy-efficient inverter systems, and the individual geysers in the rooms have been pulled out to make way for a central heat recovery, heat pump system,” Ford said.
“The incandescent lighting systems have also been replaced with energy-efficient LED lighting, and room ceilings have been insulated to help regulate temperatures.”
Ford said Protea Hotel Kruger Gate was one of 20 hotels that formed the first phase of a concerted portfolio energy sustainability drive across Protea Hotels.
“The retrofits of lighting and water heating systems make sense not only from a sustainability perspective, but also from a savings perspective for hoteliers who face ever-increasing input costs.
Protea Hospitality Group Director of Sales Marketing and Revenue, Danny Bryer, said forward bookings showed that the hotel would have an extremely busy summer season with both domestic and international leisure travellers.
“The new facilities and the room revamps are extremely impressive and I know GUESTS are going to love what’s been done to the hotel.
“The Protea Hospitality Group has very high service and brand standards, which shows in the amount of repeat business through our doors. GUESTS will always vote with their feet – or their credit cards – and it says volumes that the bulk of our business comes from GUESTS who stay with us again and again,” Bryer said.
